EVALUATION SUMMARY 1999 – 2005
Increased Opportunities at middle schools who participated in the California GEAR UP Program for two years. More middle school students are taking courses that prepare them for Advanced Placement or Honors courses in high school:
- 46% more advanced Mathematics courses,
primarily Algebra & Geometry
- 54% more advanced English/Language Arts courses
- 24% more advanced Science courses
- 92% more advanced Social Science courses
- 41% more schools engage students in developing individual academic plans, serving 169% more students
- 44% more schools provide postsecondary information meetings, serving 134% more students
- More resources are available for schools to provide information on college to students
The California GEAR UP Program has served
196,000 low-income students in 187 schools in 80 school districts --
15.6% of the middle schools in the state
31% of the low-income middle schools in the state

Gains in Achievement for ALL students:
- 44% more students enrolled in Algebra 1 by Grade 8
- 45% more students enrolled in Geometry by Grade 8
- California GEAR UP middle schools increased 10.7% on the Academic Performance Index (API) compared to a 2% increase for all middle schools in California
- Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) increased 37.4% for English/ Language Arts and 24.4% for Mathematics in CGU middle schools
3,750 students received $2,000 Education Trust Awards -- a total of $7.5 million
The first 250 students accessed their awards for college in the fall 2005. |
