Advanced Courses 1999-2006

The courses that are monitored are: English/Language Arts, Mathematics (PreAlgebra, Algebra 1, and Geometry), Science, Social Science, and Foreign Language. Advanced courses could be Gifted, Honors, Accelerated, International Baccalaureate (IB), or other locally defined advanced course.

Data: Number of sections of advanced courses offered, and number and percent of schools offering them, with change and percentage of change from baseline year to year 2 of participation. Algebra 1 and Geometry is also reported by the number and percent of students taking the tests.

Advanced Courses

Change in number of advanced classes:

  • 52% increase in combined number of sections of advanced English, Mathematics, Science and Social Science courses (2,226 to 3,383 = +1,157).
    There were 6,340 sections of advanced courses offered during 2 years of participation.
    • 53% increase in number of sections of advanced Mathematics courses (1,059 to 1,619 = +560).
      There were 3,027 sections of advanced Mathematics courses offered during 2 years of participation.
    • 53% increase in number of sections of advanced English/Language Arts courses (482 to 737 = +255).
      There were 1,394 sections of advanced English/Language Arts courses offered during 2 years of participation
    • 36% increase in number of sections of advanced Science courses (361 to 491 = +130).
      There were 958 sections of advanced Science courses offered during 2 years of participation
    • 65% increase in number of sections of advanced Social Science courses (324 to 536 = +212).
      There were 961 sections of advanced Social Science s courses offered during 2 years of participation
    • 6% decrease in number of sections of Foreign Language courses (157 to 147 = -10).
      There were 292 sections of advanced Foreign Language courses offered during 2 years of participation

Change in number and percent of students taking Algebra 1 and Geometry:

  • 86% increase in enrollment in 8th Grade Algebra 1 (15,592 to 21,020 = +7,728).
    Percent of students enrolled increased from 25.0% to 38.4%. Statewide increased from 35.4% to 47.7%
    50,823 8th Grade students were enrolled in Algebra 1 during 2 years of participation, 31.1% of total enrollment.
  • 33% increase in enrollment in 8th Grade Geometry (602 to 813 = +211).
    Percent of students enrolled increased from 1.1% to 1.5%. Statewide increased from 2.1% to 3.1%
    2,255 8th Grade students were enrolled in Geometry during 2 years of participation, 1.4% of total enrollment.
