California GEAR UP presents ‘Building Bridges’, a partnership with local school districts and Sacramento State University to bring Valley High Students together with Oakridge Elementary school students to Sac State for a unique and engaging day of activities. California GEAR UP Valley High School collaboration participated in a week long training on the interactive college prep website californiacolleges.edu. On the site students create a profile that allows them to track their progress towards college, including A-G requirements, career and interest assessments, grades tracking, and the ability to begin, finish, and submit their college applications directly to their chosen schools. Christian Smith is tasked with training all the Valley students in their English classes Californiacolleges.edu is supported throughout the state by its administrator, Michael Burton (pictured). Valley High School in Elk Grove Unified School District in Sacramento hosted a press conference and a wide array of activities for honored guests on September 18, 2009 in celebration of 10 years of California GEAR UP. Highlights of the day included visits to the GEAR UP Parent Center, a panel of GEAR UP Leadership Skills Initiative Students, and a press conference featuring State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, a student speaker from the Leadership Skills Initiative (LSI), and a parent volunteer.
