Results from the 140 California middle schools that participated in California GEAR UP School-Based Services for two consecutive years from 1999-2006: (108 schools had Grade 6).
INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS
Change in Number of Students in Advanced Courses
- 52% increase in number of sections of all advanced courses (2,226 to 3,383 = +1,157)
Percent of schools offering advanced courses increased from 56.4% to 69.8%
- 53% increase in number of sections of advanced Mathematics courses (1,059 to 1,619 = +560)
Percent of schools offering advanced Mathematics courses increased from 89% to 96%
- 53% increase in number of sections of advanced English/language Arts courses (482 to 737 = +255)
Percent of schools offering advanced English/language Arts courses increased from 58% to 75%
- 36% increase in number of sections of advanced Science courses (361 to 491 = +130)
Percent of schools offering advanced Science courses increased from 43% to 54%
- 53% increase in number of sections of advanced Social Science courses (1,059 to 1,619 = +560)
Percent of schools offering advanced Social Science courses increased from 36% to 54%
- 56% increase in Algebra 1 enrollment in 8th Grade Algebra 1 enrollment (13,492 to 21,020 = +7,528)
Percent of 8th graders in Algebra 1 increased from 25.0% to 38.4%
Percent of school offering Algebra 1 in 8th Grade increased from 87% to 96%
Change in Number of Students Receiving Academic Counseling
- 93% increase in students completing an Individual Academic Plan (33,615 to 64,992 = +31,337)
Percent of students completing a plan increased from 22% to 43%
- 75% increase in attendance at College Information meetings (53,493 to 93,350 = +39,857)
Percent of students attending a meeting increased from 35% to 62%
- 298% increase in students taking PSAT or EXPLORE tests (1,790 to 7,121 = +5,331)
Percent of students taking a test increased from 1.4% to 5.7%
Change in Expectations of Families (approximately 3,000 respondents)
- 78% expect their child to complete a baccalaureate-granting institution (2,321)
- 92% believe their child can afford to attend a baccalaureate-granting institution (2,799)
INCREASED OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS
Increased Percent Scoring Proficient or Higher on CST
- 36% increase in proficient students in English/Language Arts in 7th Grade (9,381 to 12,784 = +3,403)
Percent of 7th graders proficient in English/Language Arts increased from 17.7% to 24.0%
- 27% increase in proficient students in English/Language Arts in 8th Grade (8,311 to 10,549 = +2,238)
Percent of 8th graders proficient in English/Language Arts increased from 16.5% to 19.8%
- 55% increase in proficient students in Algebra 1 in 8th Grade (2,088 to 3,228 = +1,140)
Percent of 8th grade test takers proficient in Algebra 1 increased from 14.5% to 25.1%
Percent of enrollment increased from 6.3% to 9.9%
Increased results on school-wide Accountability Progress Reports
- 7.5% increase of Academic Performance Index (API) from 582 to 626. Statewide 673 to 694, increase of 3.1%
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) – No Child Left Behind
- Percent of students proficient in English/Language Arts increased from 19.2% to 26.4%. Statewide 24.6% to 41.4%
Percent of students proficient in Mathematics increased from 19.0% to 25.8%. Statewide 26.3% to 44.4%
