Results from the 42 California middle schools that participated in California GEAR UP

School-Based Services for three years from 2005–2008:(34 schools with Grade 6).

INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

Change in Number of Students in Advanced Courses

  • 10% increase in average enrollment in all advanced courses (8,153 to 8,981 = +828)
    Percent of students in all advanced courses increased from 20.9% to 22.8%
  • 21% increase in PreAlgebra enrollment in 7th Grade (4,934 to 5,949 = +1,015)
    Percent of 7th graders in PreAlgebra increased from 34.7% to 43.2%
  • 2% increase in Algebra 1 enrollment in 8th Grade Algebra 1 enrollment (6,745 to 6,903 = +158)
    Percent of 8th graders in Algebra 1 increased from 48.5% to 50.4%

Change in Number of Students Receiving Academic Counseling

  • 76% increase in students completing an Individual Academic Plan (10,922 to 19,287 = +8,365)
    Percent of students completing a plan increased from 28.0% to 48.9%
  • 79% increase in attendance at College Information meetings (16,831 to 28,578= +11,747)
    Percent of students attending a meeting increased from 43.1% to 72.5%
  • 103% increase in students taking PSAT or EXPLORE tests (2,294 to 4,648 = +2,354)
    Percent of students taking a test increased from 5.9% to 11.8%

Change in Expectations of Families

  • 77% expect their child to complete a baccalaureate-granting institution (2,846 of 3.680)
    86% believe their child can afford to attend a baccalaureate-granting institution (3,350 of 3,878)

 

INCREASED OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS

Increased Percent Scoring Proficient or Higher on CST

  • 11% increase in proficient students in English/Language Arts in 6th Grade (2,834 to 3,151 = +317)
    Percent of 6th graders proficient in English/Language Arts increased from 25.7% to 31.8%
  • 23% increase in proficient students in English/Language Arts in 7th Grade (4,125 to 5,055 = +930)
    Percent of 7th graders proficient in English/Language Arts increased from 28.9% to 36.1%
  • 14% increase in proficient students in English/Language Arts in 8th Grade (3,863 to 4,408= +545)
    Percent of 8th graders proficient in English/Language Arts increased from 27.7% to 31.8%
  • 16% increase in proficient students in Algebra 1 in 8th Grade (1,741 to 2,023 = +282)
    Percent of 8th grade test takers proficient in Algebra 1 increased from 24.3% to 27.9%
  • 59% increase in proficient students in Science in 8th Grade (3,471 to 5,534 = +2,063)
    Percent of 8th grade students proficient in Science increased from 25.1% to 40.1%
  • 19% increase in proficient students in History/Social Science in 8th Grade (2,732 to 3,327 = +505)
    Percent of 8th grade students proficient in History/Social Science increased from 19.7% to 23.4%
    Increased results on school-wide Accountability Progress Reports
  • 2.8% increase of Academic Performance Index (API) from 679 to 699.Statewide 720 to 742, increase of 3.1%

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) – No Child Left Behind

  • Percent of students proficient in English/Language Arts increased from 31.7% to 36.2%.Statewide 44.8% to 48.4%
  • Percent of students proficient in Mathematics increased from 28.9% to 31.6%.Statewide 48.0% to 51.2%
