sUMMARY OF school-based services 2007-2008

  1. Grant funds of up to $7,500 will be available to fund professional development activities for school staff during 2007-2008.  Other GEAR UP resources include the "Kids on Campus" video in VHS format in English and Spanish, the Pocket Guide to California Colleges and Universities, the Resources and Materials Clearinghouse and periodic Newsletters, all of which can be accessed on-line through our website, www.castategearup.org.
  1. Workshop trainings will be offered to 42 Cohort A schools and former GEAR UP Schools
  • College Board Pre-AP workshops – Cohort A schools may request the topic and provide the location for the workshop.  Topics are described on the College Board website,  http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/preap/index.html under Teacher’s Corner for Pre-AP.
  • Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) “The Student Success Path” is described on the AVID website, http://www.avidonline.org under AVID Educators, Curriculum & Teaching Materials.

  • Counseling Institutes

  1. A site license for ACT "DISCOVER" software and training is provided for middle school counselors and teachers to assist students in making important career and educational decisions.                                 
  1. Parent Institute for Quality Education family sessions (9 weeks) are provided for all Cohort A schools and the Family Initiatives Project (5 weeks) is provided for selected schools.  The principal determines the session dates.
  1. GEAR UP two-day Institutes for Principal and School Leadership Team

    Professional development activities are based on the School Self-Assessment Rubric (SSAR) that identifies the six conditions of a college-going culture. “Schools on the Move” participate as presenters.

  2. GEAR UP Forums for Principal and School Leadership Team

    The focus of the Forums is continued work on the SSAR conditions and the Sustainability of a College-Going Culture.

  3. College: Making It Happen materials are available in January 2008 for each student enrolled at GEAR UP schools, and College: Making It Happen events are hosted at local colleges.

  4. Educational Trust Awards – Student applications are due at the Student Aid Commission Office on    Friday, March 14, 2008.

  5. Facilitation for the School Leadership Team and other staff is available and must be included in the
    2007-2008 Professional Development Action Plan (PDAP).
